Year 5 Summer 2010

Teachers: Gill Seymour, Karen Reville

English

In literacy we will be looking at a variety of genres.  The children will focus on stories from other cultures; instructional writing, older narrative literature and narrative writing.
Pupils  will reflect independently and critically on their own writing and edit and improve it with a focus on VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers, punctuation)

Children will continue to read daily and will be developing their comprehension and analytical skills.

Maths

In Maths children will continue working on mental maths and written strategies in the four areas of mathematics: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  We will also be covering topics on shape and space and handling data.

It is really important that the children follow their mental skills by continuing to practice them at home.  Knowing their number bonds to 100 and being able to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000 will aid their mathematical skills in class.

ICT

During the first half of the term we will be using ICT to collect and analyse data as part of our ‘Fit for Life’ project.  In the second half of the term the children will focus on graphic modelling.

Geography

The children are going to learn about a contrasting UK locality.  The town we have chosen is Bideford in Devon.
As part of our festival at the end of the term, the children will be learning about Mexico.

Pupils will be learning about the Aztecs as part of our international festival at the end of term.
