Year 4 Autumn 2009

Teachers: Paula Spencer, Julia Keily

English

This term we will be covering a range of different texts, including information texts, stories, playscripts and instructions.  The children will identify key features of successful texts and use these examples to gain an understanding of how to plan and write their own.

Guided reading sessions will take place everyday for 20 minutes. It is important fro your child’s development that they experience regular reading sessions at home too.

Homework will be set on Friday and due in on Tuesday.

Maths

Maths continues to take the form of the Numeracy Hour and is taught everyday.

This term we will be covering all the different aspects of maths, from addition to 3-dimensional shapes.

We will also be focusing on our mental maths skills and Improving our recall of addition, subtraction and multiplication facts.

It would be very helpful if your child could practise the following at home regularly
-2,3,4,5,10 x tables
-number bonds to 10 and 100  eg: 2 + 8 = 10        20 + 80 = 100
-telling the time

Homework will be set on Friday and due in on Tuesday.

ICT

Over the course of the term, we will be focusing on word processing programs.  We will be changing font size and colour and questioning its effect on the ‘audience’

Geography

The children will be learning about water (where it comes from, what happens to it before it reaches us, what happens when it leaves us) and its importance to many places.

History

The class will learn about Ancient Egypt. We will focus specifically on the River Nile

RE

We will be comparing the religious symbols and beliefs between Christianity and Sikhism, and looking at how personal experiences and feelings can influence our attitudes and actions.

PE

We will be learning about gymnastics during this term. An outdoor education trip involving team building has been organised to Stanborough for the beginning of October. More information about this will follow.

Design and Tecnology

The children will be designing and making their own biscuits.

Science

We will be looking at two main topics in Science this term.  These are ‘Materials which conduct heat’ and ‘Changing and separating materials’.

In both projects the children will have the opportunity to design and try out their own experiments, giving reasons for their choices using scientific vocabulary.

We will use the Sounds Musical scheme and we shall be singing as well as composing music.

Art

The theme for after half term is ‘What a Performance’ and focuses on the costume and head wear of performers and people from different countries and cultures.
