English

The children will continue to follow the National Literacy Strategy. During their daily literacy hour the children will be speaking, listening, reading and writing. This term our main areas of study will be

  • Phonics and spelling
  • Word recognition
  • Sentence construction
  • Punctuation, especially capital letters and full stops
  • Reading comprehension
  • Writing composition
  • Handwriting
During the school day the children will be able to read a wide range of books, and will also bring home a book to share with you. Please read and listen to your child read for about 10 minutes a day, writing comments in the contact book

 

Maths

During our Numeracy sessions this term the children will study

  • Counting, properties of numbers and number sequences
  • Place value and ordering
  • Understanding +and –
  • Mental calculation strategies
  • Money, real life problems and making decisions
  • Measures including time and length
  • Shape and space
  • Data handling

 

ICT

During our ICT sessions the children will work in the computer suite following two programmes of study

  • Introduction to modeling
Using a word bank

 

Geography

Our geography theme this term will be:

‘Around our School’. This topic will see us studying the local area, looking at man-made and natural features. We will go on short walks out and about around the school, so please watch the class window for details.

History

During History this term we will be asking the question ‘What were homes like a long time ago?’  We will compare our houses of today with those from the past, asking such questions as how are they the same and how are they different? Linked to this theme both classes will be visiting the’ Celtic Harmony Camp’ on Tuesday 22nd September. See accompanying letter.

RE

There are two main themes this term

  • Harvest – thanking God for nature
Festivals of light

 

PE

The children will take part in dance, gymnastic and games lessons where they will explore movement and actions.

Design and Tecnology

Our Design and Technology work will enable the children to use tools safely as they design and make ‘moving pictures.

Science

This term the children will study two units in Science. Our first unit is called ‘sound’ where we will focus on hearing and recognizing sounds, the children will also investigate which sounds travel the furthest, and why!  Secondly we will study ‘light and dark’ we will explore light sources and investigate why objects cannot be seen in the dark.

Music

Our music sessions will be closely linked to our topic themes. The children will sing, compose and repeat simple tunes and patterns, listen to music and perform.

Art

“Can building speak” is the theme this term. The children will explore different methods and techniques as they build on their ideas.
